REVIEW: “A Unicorn’s Horn is Proof Against Poison” by Clare Packard

Review of Clare Packard, “A Unicorn’s Horn is Proof Against Poison,” Luna Station Quarterly 56 (2023): Read online. Reviewed by Sara L. Uckelman.

Assassination plots! Intrigue! Spies! Unicorns! True love! All in the court of Queen Elizabeth I of England. This story had just enough history and just enough fantasy to hit a sweet spot, for something really fun and enjoyable to read.

  1. […] Luna Station Quarterly is a quarterly sci-fi and fantasy short story magazine that publishes exclusively from female authors. They have general submission periods (where you can submit anything) and themed submissions (where you have to submit a story based on the chosen theme). At the time I was looking, it was the latter submission period, and the theme was ‘horses’. I had had a story idea floating in my head for a while about a unicorn and an assassin so I decided I would write the story before the submission period closed. Writing with an actual deadline in mind was definitely a good learning experience! I finished it, proofread it, handed it over to my best beta reader (my wonderful boyfriend), proofread it again, and submitted it. And it got chosen for the December 2023 issue! You can purchase a copy of the magazine here, and can read a short review of the story here. […]
